Irwin Shaw Event: Raffi Berg, Red Sea Spies: The True Story of Mossad’s Fake Diving Resort
Presented in Partnership with the 2020 Ann Arbor Jewish Book Festival
Raffi Berg discusses his book, Red Sea Spies: The True Story of Mossad’s Fake Diving Resort, with Mossad commander and subject of the book, Dani Limor, and biographer and historian, Dr. Helen Fry.
In the early 1980s on a remote part of the Sudanese coast, a new luxury holiday resort opened for business. Catering to divers, it attracted guests from around the world. Little did the visitors know that the staff were undercover spies, working for the Mossad – the Israeli secret service. Providing a front for covert night-time activities, the resort allowed the agents to carry out the secret evacuation of Ethiopian Jews who had been languishing in refugee camps and spiriting them to Israel. This true story inspired the Netflix film The Red Sea Diving Resort.
